The Coordinator and instructor for the Spring & Summer Celtic Women Institute is Dr. Gael Kains, Celtic Scholar, Educator, and Conservation Biologist. Gael is a Gael (the tribe of Scots & Irish Gaelic speakers).  Her ancestor, Chief of Clan MacMillan in 1802, came to Glengarry, Ontario, leading the largest immigration of Scottish Highalnders that Canada ever had.  There they established a community of Gaels who farmed the land and kept the culture and Gaelic language alive.  Gael has inherited many important documents from her ancestors that serve as primary documents in the preservation of Canadian pioneer and native history.  She is interested in sharing ancient and modern aspects of the Celtic peoples with participants in order to uplift those aspects that need to be remembered and preserved, for the benefit of building stronger communities.

She is active in Clan MacMillan and is a member of the clan's Community of the Tonsured Servant, that serves those in distress, crisis and trauma. She also is a member of Clans Cameron, Gray and Douglas.  For thirty years she has been an adopted member of the traditional Lakota Sioux family of Charlotte Black Elk on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and maintains a home there.  She has been observing the similarities between her culture and Lakota culture and shares her insights in these classes.  Recently she moved to Vermont yet spends part of each year on the reservation as well.

Dr. Kains has studied Celtic Studies at Harvard University, the Gaelic College of Nova Scotia, the Caledonian Society of NYC, and in Glengarry, Ontario.  She is a retired professor of environmental studies and science education and has taught at Columbia University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and SUNY at Stony Brook. Aspects of this course will examine the Celtic contribution to an earth-based lifestyle and spirituality. The hope is that people of the Celtic Diaspora will be ablle to reclaim some of their heritage and how that informs their own personal histories, understanding that cultural continuity has importance to one's identity and future path. Dr. Kains will incorporate some of her research on the  ancient Bear Religion, of Europe and North America, into these courses.
